A Call to Action

Does your business website have a clear call to action?

It's important to draw people to your website, but it's even more important for them to have a clear call to action once they're there. If you're a for profit business, you most likely want people to contact you about a service you provide, or to purchase an item you sell. Don't be afraid to tell people what you want. You don't have to be mean about it, but making it clear that you want them to take some sort of action is the goal.

Make it easy for people to contact you. You don't want people to have to search around for an hour just to figure out how they can get in touch with you.

These might seem like basic ideas, but it's worth looking at your website to see how optimized it is with a simple call to action and easily found contact information.

Why You Need an Online Presence

According to research done by the Pew Research Center (

“Many Americans begin their purchasing experience by doing online research to compare prices, quality, and the reviews of other shoppers,” said Jim Jansen, Senior Fellow at the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project and author of a new report about online product research. “Even if they end up making their purchase in a store, they start their fact-finding and decision-making on the internet.”

Facebook Accounts: Personal or Business?

One common mistake of small business owners, is to set up a Facebook account and start 'friending' people like crazy in hopes to build a long list of friends.

Why is this a mistake you ask? Because if you're able to friend people, then you don't have a business account. The main difference in how you use a personal account versus a business account is the "friend" aspect. With a business account people have to 'like' you; you can't actively pursue them and ask to be friends, at least not in the traditional Facebook way.

It's important to set up a business account properly because you will get a lot more useful statistics with it. Business pages have access to Facebook Insights, which shows you how many people you've reached, how many people are engaged, and other useful information to demonstrate the benefit of your Facebook account on your business.

It's Time to Change Your Website If...

Top reasons you should really consider changing your website.

It looks like it's from the early 90's
Outdated website example from the 1990s
Groovy Productions (

It has very limited content, a million banner ads, and apparently spinning, flashing, moving graphics were in.
Don't bombard people with banner ads and no content or they'll never come back.

It keeps going and going and going...
Outdated website example that is just one long page

It's hard to tell from a screen grab, but this website's problem is that the page just scrolls on and on forever. Everything is on one page; where is the end?

Google Analytics or Bust

So you hear everyone and their mother talking about Google Analytics these days and that's for good reason.

Google Analytics is an important tool because it helps you to be able to see who is using your site, how they are finding you, how long they stay there and so many more details from their geographic region to the type of web browser they use.

By knowing all of this information, you can build your site to improve its effectiveness.

By changing keywords on your site you can get more relevant hits in search engines. For example if I found that Purple Fish Marketing was getting a lot of 'pageviews' from people searching for the keyword fishing lures, I might want to re-assess what kind of keywords are on my site. Am I not focusing enough on the topic of marketing or the services that I provide?

Finding Your Voice on the Web

No, I don't mean that voice. Leave singing to showers and cars, unless you're good, then maybe you can put some singing on your website.

What I mean is your writing voice. This seems to be tricky for people because it's finding a balance of selling the product or service that you're providing, but being personable at the same time. Just like I mentioned in the link building article (which you can find here) you wouldn't go into a crowded room and start spouting out information about what you're selling; the same goes here, it's best to just be yourself. If you don't act like yourself when you write, your website and information will come across as contrived and people will be turned off by it. You want people to like you right?

Hiring an Internet Marketing Company

There are a lot of buzzwords and abbreviations in any industry and they can certainly seem overwhelming if you don’t know what they mean. This article isn’t going to explain what each of the terms means, I’ll slowly do that over time to help educate you, but rather the point of this article is to make you more comfortable with hiring someone.

We can all get caught up in our own industry jargon, it’s not necessarily a bad thing, but people often forget that you, the business owner, might not know all the jargon or what it means. Never feel bad about asking for an explanation as to what something means or why it’s being proposed.

Remembering the 4 P's of Marketing

Do you know the 4 P's or marketing? Did you know them at one point but think they aren't relevant anymore cause of all this online stuff? Are you wondering what the 4 P's of marketing are?

Well met me first start by saying that the Internet, in all of it's infinite abilities, is still just another tool. The 4 P's are still alive and well because they are essentially the foundation of marketing. At this point, because of the Internet, we can add another P to the mix, I'll get into that in a minute.

So what are the 4 P's? They stand for Product, Price, Promotion and Place. Pretty simple concept, yet it's been the foundation of marketing for years.

Here's an example.

Link Building your way to success

You'll see a theme in my blog posts, and that theme is that content is king. The more content you have on your website and the better that content is, the easier it will be for you to build up your links from other websites.

Link Building is essentially having your web address show up on someone elses website, blog, forum, etc... This link back to you is useful in several ways.

Link building is important because it gives your site a higher value in the eyes of Google and other search engines. Not only that, but if you have links back to your website from other places, it means it's that much easier for people to find their way to you and people will also find more value in your business because they see that someone else sees you as important.

Alt Tags for SEO

Alt tags are a basic addition you can make to images on your website that will improve search. Search engines don't know what an image contains, so in order to help them along you can add an html alt tag around an image in order to give it a description.

To add an alt tag, you need access to the code on your web site. Alt tags go inside of the tag and are used to add a text description. This is helpful if the image doesn't load, and like I mentioned above, it helps search engines know a textual description of your image. Keep the description simple and make sure the content is relevant to the image.

Here is an example of an image without an alt tag. This is an example, html tags need to be bound by greater than and less than symbols in order to work.
