So I've been giving some thought to the new Google changes, ie. Google Encryption of keyword data. For those of you that don't know yet, Google is now encrypting all keyword data from organic search, meaning you can no longer see, in Google Analytics (or any other 3rd party software), which keywords people are searching for when they come to your website (with the exception of Yahoo and Bing which still provide that data.) Although this was a huge metric that you could benchmark, improve upon and see direct results of a content keyword strategy, I think there is still a light shining through the cloud in all of this.
As a new father, I've been seeing a lot of correlations between my baby and marketing, so I thought I would put together an article about the similarities. Sort of a fun tongue and cheek approach to babies and marketing. I was planning to make this into an info-graph, but it wasn't working out, so maybe when I have a little more time I'll take a stab at it again. So without further ado, I hope you enjoy “how marketing is like a baby”.
To make it a simple correlation, going through body parts seemed like the appropriate route to take:
How do you keep up with running your business, finding clients, coming up with new ideas to keep your business from getting stale, and implementing it all?
Running a Business is Tough
Big announcement, I had a baby! Well my wife and I had a baby, and it's been great! We had a little boy, and named him Reid. He's sort of consumed all of my time lately and I've kind of neglected blogging for a little bit because of it; not to blame him or anything, he can't do a thing wrong in the world, he's just too cute and amazing. But now that he's been here a few weeks I decided it was time to get back to keeping up with the blog.
Matt Cutts of Google put together a video describing the top 5 Search Engine Optimization mistakes people make. He described them as the most common mistakes, not necessarily the worst mistakes or those with the most negative impact. Although some of them are seemingly obvious, it is a worthwhile video to watch to see the top 5 seo mistakes clearly described.
The Top 5 SEO mistakes people make are:
1. Not having a crawlable website or not having a domain at all.
If you don't have a website yet, this is certainly the biggest mistake you could be making.
There are a lot of companies that offer email marketing services; constant contact, mail chimp, and Hubspot, just to name a few. Email marketing is basically the process of emailing relevant and useful content to a group of people who have opted in to receive information from you. The key word here is opt-in. There are can-spam laws agains spamming people with content, so all email marketing services will ask you if your lists meet certain requirements before allowing you to upload them. Beyond these laws, it's also common sense to market to people who want to hear from you.
Marketing has evolved over the years and it has built upon the foundation of the 4 P's of marketing: product, price, promotion, and place. You can read more on my views of the 4 P's of marketing in this blog post, but that won't be the focus of this post. The purpose of this article, is to pose the question, how do I market my business? In the high speed, fast moving, digital world we now live in, are you keeping pace with technology and the resources you need to promote, advertise, and market your business?
In an effort to keep at the cutting edge of what marketing has to offer, I will be updating my inbound marketing certification. I will continue to keep you updated on marketing best practices and marketing tips for your business as usual, but I just wanted to take a break from those topics on the blog for a second to update you on my own professional development.
Hubspot just launched a new inbound marketing certification program. I will be participating in this new program and making sure my inbound marketing knowledge is kept as up to date as possible. The inbound marketing certification program is important to me because it allows me to hone my skills and ensure that I'm providing the best inbound marketing services that I can.
